Admissions Requirements
Humane Society University conducts admissions on a rolling basis. Applications for admission are reviewed when all required information is provided. Applications are required to submit the following information for application review:
- Completed Application, including statement of interest
- Official Transcript(s) from each college or university attended
- A resume or work history if the applicant has not taken courses over the last three years
- Recommendations (optional)
- Application fee
Note: Relocation to the Washington DC area is not necessary for purposes of enrolling in HSU since academic programs are offered online. HSU does not have residential facilities for students.
ADMISSIONS REQUIREMENTS: Undergraduate Programs
Students enter HSU with 60 or more credit hours from an accredited institution of higher learning. Admission is limited to students who have received an associate degree or completed the equivalent of at least two years of a four-year college degree program with a grade point average of 2.5 (C+) or above. Please see course catalog for more detailed information on admissions requirements.
For admission to an HSU BS degree completion program, students need to have met general education requirements in previous coursework as follows:
- Writing (composition, English, or other course designated as writing intensive): 3 credits
- Quantitative Methods (Mathematics, Statistics, Accounting): 3 credits
- Natural Sciences: 3 credits
- Social Science (Anthropology, Economics, Geography, History, Political Science, Psychology, or Sociology): 3 credits
- Arts and Humanities (Arts, Literature, Foreign Language, Philosophy, Music, or Religion): 3 credits
ADMISSIONS REQUIREMENTS: Graduate Programs
For admission to a HSU Graduate Program students who have a 4 year bachelor's degree (minimum of 120 credit hours) from an accredited college or university may apply for a second baccalaureate degree, master’s degree or graduate certificate program.
Requirements for Graduate Certificate in Animal Assisted Interventions
Students who have graduated, or have at least completed one year toward a Masters or PhD degree from an accredited college/university in a health and human service discipline, such as social work, psychology, nursing, counseling, or psychiatry are eligible to apply for admission into this graduate certificate program.
ADMISSIONS REQUIREMENTS: Individual Courses
Students who do not plan on seeking a degree at Humane Society University may take courses. However, they still must apply and meet admission requirements.
ADMISSIONS REQUIREMENTS: International Students
In addition to the standard application form and admission requirements, international students are required to submit an international education evaluation report along with transcripts and may require a TOEFL.
Evaluation Report
International students must also submit official copies of academic credentials from foreign universities in English. Transcripts from international institutions also require evaluation from a professional evaluation service such as:

- World Education Services
- AACRAO International Education Services
TOEFL
International students are required to demonstrate English language proficiency appropriate for college-level study by submitting Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) scores at the time of application for admission.

The TOEFL requirement may be waived if:
- English is an official language of the applicant's country of origin, or
- The applicant holds a degree (bachelor's or higher) from a U.S. accredited college or university.
Photocopies or faxes of TOEFL scores will not be accepted, nor will scores older than twelve months. Scores should be submitted directly to Humane Society University (ETS School Code 2840).
